For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.
Galatians 2:19
One of the great truths of Paul’s word to those who would turn from Christ to Moses, from free Grace in Christ to the works of the law, is that one must be dead to the law before they can live unto God. The Scriptures clearly teach that the law kills, condemns and curses all who are under it. However let us not miss the truth also stated here, that it is only through the law that one can be dead to the law! This means that we can only be dead to the law through a full satisfaction to all the law demands both in precept and penalty; a perfect obedience to all the demands of the law for righteousness, and a perfect satisfaction to the law of justice against sin. This full satisfaction to the law we have by the merit and sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ by virtue of our union with Him as our Representative Head. Thus being dead through and to the law, we live unto God by virtue of our union with Him in regeneration and faith. I am crucified with Christ : nevertheless I live (representation) ; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: (regeneration); and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God (the gift of God’s grace); Who loved me and gave Himself for me (His merit and sacrifice). Verse 20. This is what Paul speaks of in Romans 3:31. Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the Law. Any preaching contrary to this is an attempt to frustrate the grace of God.
